Subject: Photocopiers
From a damage perspective, edge copiers are just as risky as center glass machines. The risks to bindings occur as the book is repeatedly flipped into a face-down position. The edge copier complicates this handling further with the dangling portion hanging from the edge. In comparison with these manipulations the flat opening press-down on a center glass machine is relatively safe. At this point there are also some production advantages with a center glass, including the ability to extend the gutter margin and print in duplex. The fundamental problem, relative to work from bound books, with all copiers and with scanners to come is their face-down working configuration. The face-up configuration, as in filming, is better for bound books.
