New York State Preservation Administration Intern A ten-month internship in preservation administration is offered in the Department of Preservation and Conservation, Cornell University Library, June 1st, 1994 to March 31st, 1995. This is a temporary ten-month professional position funded by the New York State Program for the Conservation and Preservation of Library Research Materials. The intern will be selected from among students graduating from library schools in New York State and librarians working in libraries of New York State. The intern will train under the general supervision of the Director, John F. Dean, and Associate Director, Anne R. Kenney, and will be exposed to a broad orientation through each of the Department's eleven units. The Department consists of eight professionals and 20 technicians and support staff dispersed through: Central Office (general administration, grant development, system-wide preservation planning, information clearing house,etc.); Brittle Book Replacement: (a continuing program of replacement involving bibliographic searching and liaison with selectors); Scanning and Digitization (electronic scanning/digitization, facsimile reproduction of library and archives materials, research and development projects); Commercial Binding Office (the centralized processing of library materials through commercial binders); Preservation Microfilming (identification and preparation of materials for filming, contract specification, inspection, etc.); Preparations (the pre- shelf processing by stiffening and pamphlet casing of new, unbound monographs); Collections Conservation (the large-scale conservation treatment of rare library materials, construction of protective enclosures, etc.); Paper Conservation (the conservation treatment of art-on-paper, unbound manuscripts, maps, prints, etc.); Book Conservation (the individual conservation treatment of rare books and bound manuscripts); Book Repair (the rapid repair of circulating books); Conservation Liaison (the survey and furbishing of all library and archives collections, documentation, selection criteria, environmental monitoring). The intern will work at various preservation tasks, and will carry out a substantial preservation project addressing some significant issue in preservation. The intern will also attend staff and other pertinent meetings, and participate in workshops and other training programs conducted by the Department. Qualifications required include: A.L.A. accredited library degree; general knowledge of preservation practice, as demonstrated by relevant library experience and/or formal course in preservation of library materials. Salary for ten months $26,890 plus benefits. Travel funds are available to attend professional meetings and other educational events.
