Subject: Preservation of artifactual value in microfilming projects
When we microfilm volumes with photos or illustrations that the selector wishes to retain in hard copy format in addition to filming them, we use a target which states "The original illustrations from this microfilmed book are located in___________" (the particular location is listed). When the microfilm returns from the vendor, the film and the original are sent to the Catalog Dept. The film is cataloged with the note "illustrations are located in the ____________ library". The illustrations and the title page are removed from the original volume, deacidified, repaired as needed, put in a protective enclosure or acid free envelope, depending upon the number of items. The film number is placed on this container, sent to the particular location, and available to users upon surrender of their ID. When the original is to be photocopied and the selector wishes to retain the photos/illustrations, they are removed, sent to the Conservation Lab to be deacidified, and encapsulated. When the encapsulated pages are inserted in the correct place in the photocopied book, a blank sheet is placed between the encapsulated page and the photocopied pages; the pages are trimmed, the photocopied volume with the encapsulated pages is cataloged, and then sent to the commercial binder for binding. *** Conservation DistList Instance 7:61 Distributed: Sunday, February 20, 1994 Message Id: cdl-7-61-002 ***Received on Friday, 18 February, 1994
