Subject: Integrated pest management
The following posting showed up recently on one of the lists to which I subscribe and I thought it might be of general interest. Date: 28 Jan 94 Sender: Agriculture Discussion <AGRIC-L [at] uga__cc__uga__edu> From: Allan Deutsch <deutscha [at] bcc__orst__edu> New Electronic Source For IPM Information ----------------------------------------- IPMnet is up--and at least jogging, if not sprinting. The importance of making environmentally friendly pest management information more widely available, coupled with the nearly instantaneous, round-the-clock access of the Internet, has produced IPMnet, the Global IPM Information Service, offering integrated pest management (IPM) support on-line 24 hours/day. IPMnet is designed to provide researchers, technical specialists, and producers--as well as others who may be interested--a free source of current international IPM information. It is also structured to create a world-wide forum for developing and fostering IPM. IPMnet, a joint effort of the Consortium for International Crop Protection (CICP) and the National Biological Impact Assessment Program (NBIAP, of the U.S. Department of Agriculture), was created in late 1993 to assemble and disseminate global information that will support IPM research, teaching, technology implementation, and policy development. The IPMnet electronic bulletin board contains a newsletter, information exchange forum, technical reports, and databases. IPMnet is intended to provide institutions and individuals with access to a body of information that could be difficult and expensive to collect through other means. In addition to serving as an information resource, IPMnet also provides an effective channel for contacting others working on the same problems. It also can serve as a locator for finding specialized equipment or materials. There is also a forum to use for engaging colleagues around the world in discussion and debate related to IPM development and strengthening issues. There is NO subscription fee or cost to use IPMnet, other than that associated with using Internet. IPMnet sponsors want to provide information and services to as wide and varied a constituency as feasible. The only usage requirements are that first-time contacts complete a brief questionnaire indicating professional interests and expertise, and, secondly, that IPMnet users adopt a willingness to interact with others in the network. The professional profiles of those contacting the IPMnet will help build a database of IPM-knowledgeable individuals that can itself become a useful component of the network. (Hard copy Registration Questionnaires also can be requested from: CICP, Cornell University, NYAES, Geneva, NY 14456-0462, USA; voice: 315-787-2252 * fax: 315-787-2276). IPMnet's co-sponsors point out that the bulletin board concept of electronic information has great potential, but only if the community served participates. If IPMnet is to fulfill its envisioned role, national and international organizations and individuals need to actively take part in using and cooperatively supporting the service. That means sharing--as well as seeking--information, offering opinions, and providing guidance. Of course, any existing IPM-related databases that could be shared with the IPM community would be most welcome at IPMnet. The IPMnet Newsletter also is interested in running articles about IPM (with author credit). The IPMnet is accessed through the Internet by selecting/keying in the following (through a communication program/link): <telnet> then, at the prompt, keyboard: <cicp.biochem.vt.edu> From here on, a series of prompts guide users. For those without access to telnet, contact CICP at the address above to place your name on a list for receipt of a hard copy of the IPMnet Newsletter, if/when funds can be found to support printing and mailing. CICP and NBIAP invite broad participation in IPMnet and, importantly, comments and suggestion for its improvement. The goal is to collectively support and strengthen IPM and generate a positive force for global benefit.
