Cleaning and housing phonograph discs

From: Normandy Helmer <nhelmer>

We have begun to process a large collection of phonodiscs, dating from
the '60s. They are filthy and musty, and we would like to clean then
before adding them to our collection. (We can't afford a cleaning
machine.) The music librarian recommended washing them with distilled
water and Ivory liquid, but I'd like to disinfect them, if possible. A
query to the Music Library Association list produced several
suggestions: 1. Don't use Lysol. 2. Use PhotoFlo, 3. Use bleach, 4. Use
alcohol. Would someone with a chemistry background please comment?

I also need to find a source for replacement sleeves. These are 12-inch
discs, and the cardboard jackets fit so snugly that modern poly-lined
paper sleeves wrinkle and split out the elderly jackets. Any
recommendations?
