Subject: ASTM workshop on printing and writing papers
Speakers and Topics Announced for July Workshop on the Effects of Paper Aging Philadelphia, February 21--The ASTM (American Society for Testing and Matierla) Institute for Standards Research (ISR) has announced the speakers and topics for a three-day global workshop that will focus on the effects of aging on printing and writing papers. The workshop is scheduled for July 6-8 at ASTM Headquarters in Philadelphia, PA. At the request of ASTM Committee D-6 on Paper and Paper Products, ISR is assisting in the endeavor to initiate research that is intended to determine the possibility of producing specifications based only on the functional requirements of the end users of printing and writing papers in lieu of current prescriptive-based specifications. The intent of the workshop is to provide a forum for the broadest possible input to the requirements of the research program. Open to the public, people from the producer, consumer/user, and general interest communities will be invited to attend. They will be asked to participate in formulating a prioritized set of research requirements that can be presented to research institutions for bids and then to funding organizations for the solicitation of funds to carry out that research. To achieve the ultimate goal of determining the possibility of producing performance-based specifications, it will be necessary to at least understand the mechanisms of the natural aging of these papers in conditions of normal storage, as well as to further understand the sound science regarding the role of lignin in the aging of paper. Moreover, it must be determined whether or not reliable test methods can be developed for the accelerated aging of papers in the presence of heat and humidity, light, and atmospheric pollutants. The first day of the workshop includes the following topics of discussion: "An Overview of Paper Deterioration," Mr. Terry Norris, Retired Chairman of Nekoosa Edwards Paper Company and former President of TAPPI "Paper Permanence: Present Needs and Future Opportunities," Dr. Paul N. Banks, University of Texas, Austin, TX "The Mechanisms of Chemical Deterioration of Paper," Dr. Paul Whitmore, Research Center on the Materials of the Artist and the Conservator, Carnegie Mellon Research Institute, Pittsburgh, PA "The Mechanisms of Physical Deterioration of Paper," Dr. Derek H. Page, Institute of Paper Science and Technology, Atlanta, GA "The Mechanisms of Optical Deterioration of Paper," Dr. Rajai Atalla, USDA-Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, WI "Artificial Aging of Paper: Correlation with Natural Aging," Dr. Derek J. Priest, Department of Paper Science, UMIST, Manchester, UK "Chemistry and Physics of Lignin Containing Papers as they Relate to Paper Permanence," Dr. Cyril Heitner, PAPRICAN, Pointe Claire, Quebec "Optical Properties of Lignin Containing Papers as they Relate to Paper Permanence," Dr. Gordon J. Leary, Network of Centres of Excellence, Pointe Claire, Quebec "Paper Composition: Other Important Considerations Affecting Paper Permanence," Dr. Bruce Lyne, International Paper Company, Tuxedo, NY "Accelerated Aging Test Methods: Pros and Cons," Dr. Chandru Shahani, U.S. Library of Congress Preservation Office, Washington, D.C. "Canadian Cooperative Permanent Paper Research Program: Development Process - Physical Testing Aspects," Dr. Norayr Gurnagul, PAPRICAN, Pointe Claire, Quebec "Canadian Cooperative Permanent Paper Research Program: Development Process - Chemical Testing Aspects," Dr. Helen Burgess, Canadian Conservation Institute, Ottawa, Ontario "The European Community Science & Technology for Environmental Protection (STEP) Program, Mr. John B.G.A. Havermans, TNO Industrial Research, The Netherlands "Swedish R&D Project on Paper Preservation," Dr. Tom Lindstrom, Ornskoldsvik, Sweden During the second and third days of the workshop, attendees will meet in small groups to determine research priorities. Building on the current state of scientific understanding presented during day one, the small groups will define remaining individual research needs. The entire group will then seek to reach consensus on the scope and priority of research needed to determine the possibility of producing performance-based specifications." The workshop is being sponsored by the Canadian Conservation Institute, Champion International, Domtar Inc., DuPont Canada Inc., Fibreco Pulp Inc., the Guild of Fine Art Care and Treatment Standards, International Paper, Louisiana-Pacific Corp., Lyons Falls Pulp and Paper, Millar Western Pulp Ltd., the National Archives of Canada, the National Gallery of Art (U.S.), the National Information Standards Organization, the National Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Property, the National Library of Canada, Potlatch Corp., Slave Lake Pulp Ltd., Tembec Inc., the USDA-Forest Products Laboratory-Paper Physics and Fiber Product Research, and West Fraser Ltd.
