The Magnetic Media Challenge: Preservation of Audio Tape & Videotape in Libraries and Archives The Queen Mary, Long Beach, California April 29?30, 1994 The Institute will introduce the concepts and techniques of preserving magnetic media. Expected attendees will be librarians, archivists, and other custodians of collections containing audio tape and videotape who are mindful of the need to preserve these media either as archival materials or as items for access and use. The Institute is a based upon one offered in May 1993 at Georgia State University. Goals and Objectives: Participants will gain an understanding of the history of audio and videotape recording technology; the physical characteristics and life expectancy of magnetic tape; proper storage and handling techniques; the challenges of recording aging tape for preservation purposes; administrative and management issues; balancing the need for preservation against access; the unique role that magnetic tape serves as a source for scholarly and research information. Breakout sessions will be interspersed throughout the two-day Institute to foster further discussion and to provide a forum for sharing information among participants. Attendees will be notified of recommended readings in advance of the Institute. Location: The program will be held on The Queen Mary. This magnificent ocean liner made her maiden voyage in 1936 and is now permanently berthed at 1126 Queen's Highway in Long Beach, California, after 1001 trans-Atlantic crossings. The ship, which is included on The National Register of Historic Places, offers several restaurants ranging from formal to informal, shops, and tours. The program will be held on The Queen Mary, located at Long Beach, California. Housing: A block of rooms has been reserved at The Queen Mary. Rates (for both king and twin) are $69 for inside, no view; $79 for a land view; and $89 for a harbor view.Call the Queen Mary directly at 310-499-1655 before March 28. Mention the "Magnetic Media Institute" for the special institute room rate. Fees: $155 ALCTS members; $200 ALA personal members; $245 for non-ALA members. Fees include instructional materials, one lunch, and breaks. Registration: To register by mail, fill out the attached Registration Form, and include with payment or governmental purchase order. Registration will be limited to 125 persons. Cancellations will be accepted only until April 8, 1994 (subject to a $25 processing fee). ALCTS reserves the right to cancel the institute if there is insufficient registration or for other reasons.
