This hands-on workshop will show administrators and staff how to review and inspect the final product and make sure that it meets preservation standards. the workshop will touch briefly on document quality, and how it relates to film; bibliographic control, including targeting; plus the actual filming process, and the decisions that the technicians need to make. Topics that will be covered in more depth will include current standards for preservation microfilm and key elements in evaluating the finished film. Presented by: Shawne Diaz Cressman, Microfilming Production Coordinator, Northeast Document Conservation Center James Lane, Associate Librarian, Preservation Unit, New York State Library Steve Dalton, Director of Reprographic Services, Northeast Document Conservation Center 2. The purpose of NEDCC's training program on preservation microfilming is to facilitate the national preservation effort to microfilm brittle books and other research materials. The program is designed to train project administrators in research institutions to plan, implement, and manage filming projects. This is NOT a technician training program. Participants will learn skills for planning preservation microfilming projects; for selecting materials for filming; for developing specification; and for writing contracts with vendors. Instruction will focus on compliance with national standards for producing preservation microfilm and on quality control. The program will include hands-on experience in inspection and quality control procedures and will give participants a concrete benchmark for evaluating the quality of work. It will address how to select and evaluate a vendor of preservation microfilming services as well as going into depth on how to manage outside contracts.
