Preservation Librarian
(New Position)

North Carolina State University Libraries invites applications and
nominations for the position of Preservation Librarian.  This position
offers an outstanding opportunity for a creative librarian to shape the
NCSU Libraries' preservation program.  Under the guidance of the
Associate Director for Technical Services and Collection Management, the
Preservation Librarian will work in close relationship with the
Collection Management and Acquisitions Departments, in consultation with
the Libraries' service units, and in the context of relevant on-campus
academic programs in areas such as Archival Management and Pulp and
Paper Sciences.  The Libraries has just completed a Collection Analysis
Project under the auspices of ARL/OMS, a key element of which was the
recommendation to establish a preservation program.  The Preservation
Librarian will begin with a senior staff assignment to study and
evaluate the diverse preservation activities and needs of the Libraries.
The Preservation Librarian will then recommend long term organizational
and reporting structures, and guide the planning and implementation of a
cohesive program.

Responsibilities

Analyze and evaluate existing preservation activities and needs;
formulate program objectives, plan for implementation, and manage
program; maintain high level of technical expertise to ensure effective
disaster response, ongoing preservation activities, and conservation
projects; maintain awareness of and ability to implement emerging
preservation technologies; evaluate products and work of preservation
contractors and vendors; prepare grant proposals for preservation
project funding; participate in appropriate regional and national
preservation initiatives.

Qualifications

Required:  ALA-accredited MLS.  Minimum of five years relevant
professional library experience; broad knowledge of preservation and
conservation, including technical, physical and bibliographic aspects,
based on at least two years of focused work experience, equivalent
course work, or related training; effective management and supervisory
skills; familiarity with automated library systems and library binding
practices; excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication
skills; demonstrated program planning and leadership skills.

Preferred: Familiarity with the care and handling of archives,
photographs, film, and other non-book materials; experience with or
awareness of use of digital technology in preservation; skills in
pursuing funding opportunities and in writing grant proposals;
experience with commercial and cooperative contracts.

B. Lyons Design Library, the Natural Resources Library, and the Learning
Resources Library.  In 1990, the Libraries completed a substantial
addition to its main building. With a staff of 230 FTE, the Libraries
has a total annual budget in excess of $12 million, has 1.5 million
volumes in its collection, and acquires over 18,000 current serials.

The NCSU Libraries is a founding member of SOLINET and a member of the
Association of Research Libraries and the Center for Research Libraries.
Together with Duke University and the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill, NCSU founded the Triangle Research Libraries Network
(TRLN), a cooperative effort of distinction among three major research
libraries with combined resources approaching 10 million volumes.

Salary and Benefits

Minimum salary $35,000.  Librarians at NCSU have academic status without
tenure or rank.  Benefits include:  26 days vacation; health insurance,
and TIAA/CREF, state, or other retirement options.  Additional and
optional dental, life, disability, deferred compensation, and legal
plans are available.  Tuition waiver program for all campuses of The
University of North Carolina is available.
