Conservation OnLine Gopher

From: Walter Henry <whenry>
Date: Monday, April 25, 1994
I am happy to announce that Conservation OnLine (CoOL) is now available
via Gopher as well as WAIS. CoOL, a project of the Preservation
Department of Stanford University Libraries, is a full text database of
conservation information. The databases cover a wide spectrum of topics
of interest to those involved with the conservation of museum, library,
and archive materials.

To use CoOL, point your gopher to palimpsest.stanford.edu (port 70).
(For people who must use public gopher clients, be patient; it will be a
while before CoOL appears on their menus.)

Among the materials available, both for browsing and free-text
searching, are

* the archives of the Conservation DistList
* the Newsletter of the Western Association for Art Conservation
* most publications of the Commission on Preservation and Access
* The ConsDir, a directory of people involved with
    conservation/preservation
* a variety of disaster preparedness documents
* a broad range of documents on all aspects of conservation.

This new incarnation of CoOL provides browse-access to all of the
materials previously accessible only via WAIS, as well as links to other
information resources around the network. Since it offers a superset of
what had previously been offered, it will be considered the preferred
point of access to CoOL, though the WAIS databases will be continue to
be maintained. In a short time, we will also offer World Wide Web (WWW)
access to CoOL. The web server will offer access to not only the Gopher
and WAIS materials, but a number of <teaser>"value-added" documents that
should be of great interest to DistList readers (</teaser>). Please note
that the Cons FileList is being phased out, as its functions are
completely subsumed by CoOL; in a month or two it will quietly fade
away.

The content of the CoOL databases comes from a variety of sources and we
hope that all users will consider contributing some material to the
project. As you use the server please pay attention to lacunae that you
might be able to help fill. If you would like to contribute material to
CoOL, please send a note to waiscool [at] palimpsest__stanford__edu.

NB I *can not* offer any kind of support for client software. If you
have trouble, please see your local guru. (No exceptions).

If you haven't got a client on your system, you can use one of the
following services via telnet:

     Hostname IP# Login Area

     consultant.micro.umn.edu 134.84.132.4 gopher North America
     ux1.cso.uiuc.edu 128.174.5.59 gopher North America
     panda.uiowa.edu 128.255.40.201 panda North America
     gopher.msu.edu 35.8.2.61 gopher North America
     gopher.ebone.net 192.36.125.2 gopher Europe
     gopher.sunet.se 192.36.125.10 gopher Sweden
     info.anu.edu.au 150.203.84.20 info Australia
     tolten.puc.cl 146.155.1.16 gopher South America
     ecnet.ec 157.100.45.2 gopher Ecuador
     gan.ncc.go.jp 160.190.10.1 gopher Japan

It is recommended that you run the client software instead of
logging into the public login sites. A client uses the custom
features of the local machine (mouse, scroll bars, etc.) and gives
     faster response.

For those of you who have no access to the net except mail, I will, in
another message, include information on gophermail.
