Subject: Handling books during cataloguing
About "book snakes": the ones we had made consisted of an inner tube of 10-oz. cotton duck canvass filled with steel bird shot, and an outer sleeve made of velvet. The velvet nap kept the full weight directly off of the drawings (ours were used mostly for architectural drawings). The long shape could be draped across an open book, or coiled below as a prop for one cover.
