Subject: Consolidation of gouache
We read the discussion initiated by Deborah Woodyard's inquiry about the consolidation of gouaches with considerable interest. We have the publication in press mentioned by Dr. Preusser entitled, Matte Paint, its history and technology, analysis, properties, and conservation treatment , with special emphasis on ethnographic objects. It will be available in early June. Although the emphasis is on ethnographic objects the primary concern is with matte paint found on any surface including paper. It consists of a textual introduction explaining the concepts involved, approximately 1,200 annotated bibliographic citations in four sections relating to the title, a schema, and a glossary of terms. The publication is a special supplement to Art and Archaeology Technical Abstracts which is published by the Getty Conservation Institute in association with the IIC. The authors of the original text and editors of the bibliography are Eric Hansen, Sue Walston, and Mitchell Hearns Bishop. Eric and Mitchell can be reached at the email addresses listed below. The managing editor of Art and Archaeology Technical Abstracts, Jessica Brown, can be reached at the address below for information about ordering the publication.
