Use of detergents in paper conservation

From: Wendy Smith <smith>

For my research project I am looking into the use of detergents in
paper conservation. It is known that detergents were once used for
washing paper objects but they appear to have fallen into disuse (in
Australia, at least). Has anyone used detergents for washing paper
objects or for stain removal? If so, how effective were they at
removing dirt and deterioration products? Is their use recommended?
What brands and types of detergent have been used? Have any problems
been encountered with their use? Has any research been carried out
with respect to the residue remaining in the paper and the possibly
damaging effects of this (e.g. accelerated ageing tests)? Any
information regarding this subject would be appreciated.
