Northeast Document Conservation Center has three technical leaflets I think will be helpful in evaluating the use of digital formats in libraries and archives: 1. a short annotated bibliography intended for the relatively unsophisticated reader (in re digital technology, at least); 2. "Digital Imaging Basics," Peter Jermann (4/94), a sort of simple primer on the way this technology records information plus some pros and cons for preservation and access concerns; and 3. "The Implications of Digital Imaging for Preservation," Paul Conway (4/94), a very perceptive summary of the preservation issues institutions should consider in adopting this fantastic access tool. All three will be included in the revision of Sherelyn Ogden's looseleaf "Preservation of Library and Archival Materials," expected this fall.
