Subject: Call for symposium speakers and participants
The Collection Management and Development Section (CMDS) and the Preservation and Reformatting Section (PARS) of the Association for Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) will be cosponsoring a symposium entitled "Selection for Preservation in a Digital World" at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, June 1995. Selection criteria and methodologies are rapidly evolving to accommodate the addition of digital technologies to the mix of preservation options. The objective of the symposium is to provide a forum for discussion of the issues surrounding selection of materials for preservation using digital technologies. Topics to be addressed include: technical limitations and opportunities; changes in use patterns of preserved materials; changes in use patterns of digitized materials; copyright; access issues; setting priorities; addressing text, image and sound; how scholars fit into the picture; and a look at new selection criteria being developed in the field to address these issues. The format of the 3.5 hour symposium will be composed of a combination of prepared papers, panel discussion and open audience discussion.
