We are particularly interested, at the moment, in >training methods... We conducted a 1 1/2 day workshop entitled "Disaster Recovery". It was lead by Toby Murray (library disaster planning, preparedness and recovery specialist and preservation officer at the University of Tulsa Libraries). The main focus of this workshop was to provide hands-on recovery techniques for paper- and film-based library materials damaged by water and fire. It included discussion of disaster preparedness and how to write and maintain a disaster plan. There were 25 participants--a comfortable number for handling the hands-on portion. The hands-on segment was received and complimented very well. In addition to handling the damaged (wet, muddy, swollen, etc.) materials, the participants had a chance to operate fire extinguishers. We will repeat this workshop in 1995.
