Subject: Conservation chat on America Online
THE VIRTUAL MUSEUM is a topic of interest to museum-goers, artists, educators, and all those people interested in new technologies. "Virtual Museum" is almost becoming a buzzword. What does it mean now and in the future? How is technology being effectively used to create a dialogue about museum objects and collections? Steve Dietz, the Project Director of New Media Initiatives at the National Museum of American Art, will host this series. On Monday, October 3, Dr. Elizabeth Broun, Director of the National Museum of American Art, will inaugurate Smithsonian Online's Chat area and THE VIRTUAL MUSEUM lecture series. See the transcript of her presentation to the Smithsonian's Commission on the Future in "Online Readings" or "Smithsonian Library and Archive" for background information. CONSERVATION TOPICS will let you speak with professional conservators, who can provide basic information about the care of objects. Virtually everybody collects something but not everybody knows what to do if a painting or a vintage piece of clothing is damaged. If you are knowledgeable enough to identify the program, you may not have the skills to attend to it. Information on how to select a conservator will also be presented. Joan Stahl, Coordinator Image Collections at the National Museum of American Art, will host this series. On Monday, October 10, at 9 pm Catherine Maynor and Lisa Mibach will be our guest conservators and will be available to offer general suggestions for the care and treatment of objects and tips on selecting a conservator. Since 1986, Ms. Maynor has been a paper conservator at the National Museum of American Art. She is a graduate of the Cooperstown Graduate Program in Art Conservation (now the Buffalo Art Conservation Program). Ms. Mibach heads Mibach and Associates, a conservation consulting firm in Ohio. Please join us for this groundbreaking event on Monday, October 10, at 9 pm (keyword: Smithsonian), go to Smithsonian Hall Now Open, go to Enter Smithsonian Hall. *** Conservation DistList Instance 8:26 Distributed: Wednesday, October 12, 1994 Message Id: cdl-8-26-001 ***Received on Saturday, 8 October, 1994
