Subject: RFP: Preservation education staff training kit
The following is being sent to ARCHIVES and Conservation DistList. I appologise for the duplication. Please forward to other interested people. Request for Proposal Development of a Preservation Education Staff Training Kit The Central New York Library Resources Council (CLRC) and its regional Preservation Committee is seeking to develop a Preservation Education Staff Training Program for libraries and historical agencies in the four county central New York Region. The libraries and historical societies in the region that would benefit from this program include: * thirteen academic libraries, including Syracuse University as well as two and four year colleges; * public library members of Mid-York and Onondaga County Public Library Systems; * urban, suburban and rural school libraries; * corporate and non-profit agency special libraries; and * county and local community historical agencies and archives. In 1992 ten central New York libraries and historical agencies participated in a Preservation Needs Assessment Program (PNAP). This cooperative project identified preservation needs for the region. Education was identified by at least five of the ten participants as a priority. PNAP participants and Preservation Committee members have identified the need for Preservation Education teaching aids that can be adapted for use in staff and volunteer orientations, inservice education, or group presentations in a variety of situations. They want assistance in presenting an overview of preservation issues for general collections and for some, historical or special collections. Staff training would be for all library and historical agency staff, not only those directly involved with book repair and preservation. The purpose of the training would be to raise awareness of issues such as acid paper, environmental concerns, the need for care in handling books and paper materials, the role of staff in identifying materials in need of repair or preservation treatment, etc. This project will not include training in techniques for book repair or preservation treatments. The CLRC is seeking grant funding for 1995-1996 for a regional Preservation Education Project to develop a Staff Training Kit. This Request for Proposal is intended to identify a person or group to work with the CLRC Assistant Director and the Preservation Committee. The Preservation Education Staff Training Kit should include components such as one or more of the following: An Instructor's Manual for conducting staff or volunteer orientations, inservice education or presentations; The Manual should be flexible enough so that it can be adapted to a variety of situations and should include presentation outlines, masters for overheads, slides or handouts, a list of other training resources, etc; The manual should be short and be provided in a format to be easily duplicated and distributed to libraries and historical agencies throughout the region. Visual Training Aids, e.g. slide presentation, video, poster(s), traveling exhibit, or instructions for creating in-house visual aids; Any Visual Aids created for this project should be presented in a format that can be duplicated at cost for libraries and historical agencies in the region or that can be sturdy enough to be loaned and used by many organizations. A Seminar to instruct preservation librarians, archivists or administrators in techniques for conducting Preservation Education Staff Training Programs; A Seminar would include presentation techniques and alternatives to group presentations, examples of the use of a variety of Visual Aids, evaluation, etc. The Preservation Education Staff Training Project would be completed between September 1995 and March 1996, if grant funding is available. Notification of availability of funding for the Project will not be received until late spring of 1995. Travel funding will not be included in the Project except for a training seminar. Development of other aspects of the Staff Training Kit would be done with advice and feedback of the CLRC Preservation Committee using telephone, fax and e-mail.
