Subject: Program on environmental management
The Ohio Preservation Council in conjunction with the Society of Ohio Archivists will present "Creepies, Crawlies and Bloomers: Environmental Management for Libraries, Archives and Historical Societies," a day-long program on the problems of environmental management, Friday April 7, 1995. It will be held at the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus, Ohio. Organized by the Ohio Preservation Council, a state-wide group of representatives of libraries, archives, historical societies and private consultants, the program will feature three recognized authorities speaking on problems of insect, pest and mold infestations, how to prevent, recognize and treat them. The speakers are Lisa Fox, a private consultant for preservation, Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Thomas A. Parker, president of Pest Control Services, Inc., Landsdowne, Pennsylvania, and Dr. Michael A. Vincent, curator of the Willard S. Turrell Herbarium at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Lisa Fox is a well known authority and educator in library and archival preservation. Perhaps best known for her work with the SOLINET Preservation Program, which she founded in 1985, she has presented more than 200 lectures, workshops, and training programs on library and archival preservation and disaster planning. She will focus on mold and mildew prevention and treatment strategies. Thomas Parker's experience covers all aspects of protecting valuable collections and structures from insect, bird, bat, and rodent infestations, as well as water damage and mold attack. Since forming his company in 1975 he has provided technical consultation and training for the professional pest control industry. He has completed hundreds of site visits and consultations for museums, historic societies, libraries and archives. He will deal with pest infestations and environmental monitoring and control systems. Michael Vincent will provide an overview of the problems caused by toxicity, allergies, and fungal growth in books and paper materials that have been affected by high humidity or water damage. Vincent, whose research interests include the fungal flora of the Bahamas, is also an instructor in the university's department of Botany. He has presented numerous talks on fungi, mushrooms, and related species.
