Maureen Carey <mcarey [at] scilibx__ucsc__edu> writes: >We recently took on the storage of an estate... that includes clothing The buckskin jacket with bead work, fringes, bone buttons, 2 buckskin vests with extensive beadwork, beaded bags, and bone breastplate should all be stored flat in archival quality boxes large enough to hold them with minimal folding (creases should be padded with inert materials such as crumpled acid-free tissue or washed unbleached muslin). The felt hat with rattlesnake skin hatband can be supported to prevent sagging by sewing a bean-bag cylinder of T-shirt material roughly the diameter of the hat crown and slightly longer, and filling with ethafoam crystals or styrofoam beads (careful that they don't escape). After assembly, the cylinder is "oozed" into the upside down hat, filling the crown and extending above it a little so that when turned right-side up the hat sits slightly above the shelf. A two-inch diameter "snake" is made of the same materials and is slipped over the cylinder just below the brim and following its contours to support it. The walking stick with carved bone handle can be stored flat if it lies flat on a surface, or can be tied with cotton twill tape in a vertical position. Dust covers are recommended.
