Subject: 1995 National Preservation Office conference
Preliminary announcement: Second annual conference of the National Preservation Office *Multimedia Preservation: Capturing the Rainbow* 27-30 November 1995 Brisbane, Queensland, Australia Rationale: Interactive multi-media are like rainbows--perceptible but not tangible. The only way to reproduce them is understanding how they are produced. The Australian Government's cultural policy places considerable emphasis on using multimedia to disseminate information and culture. It also urges artists to use the new technologies to create artistic works. The policy also emphasises the role of the Government in preserving our heritage. As we move toward a global village where universal access to electronic information is breaking down the boundaries between traditional libraries, archives, museums and galleries, how will we ensure that the new form of culture is preserved for future generations? How feasible is the idea of digitising the collections of libraries and archives, and of producing interactive multi-media products to make accessible the collections in museums and galleries? Conference Topics: Among other issues the conference will address * advantages and disadvantages of digitising for preservation * economic issues for electronic conversion programs * incompatibility and longevity of hardware and software * standards for electronic conversion and bibliographic control of digitised material * coordinating activities to prevent duplication and to ensure uniform standards * copyright and other legal issues * suitability of procedures and standards that are in accord with those of other countries * relationships between collecting institutions, their patrons, electronic publishers and service bureaux Conference Activities: * poster sessions. Some people may choose to present material in a static display, rather than to deliver an oral presentation at the conference. Topics could include case studies, examples of inferior quality products, new products, research-in-progress reports. * preconference workshops will be offered on 1) the preservation of electronic media, covering management and practical concerns, 2) using digital technology for preservation reformatting, with practical demonstrations. * trade displays and demonstrations * conference dinner * cocktail reception Expressions Of Interest: If you are interested in receiving more information about this conference, please forward the following information to Katy Bellingham by email: kbelling [at] nla__gov__au, fax: +61-6-273-4493 or regular mail as below.
