Subject: Labelling
In response to Noel Carmack's request for "an effective, inexpensive, 'archival' label protector that will work well" I pass along UC San Diego's approach. For over 20 years we have been applying a glue wash over call number labels. We have found it to be highly effective, very cheap material wise (Brodart Bind-Art transparent liquid plastic adhesive), and workable on all types of covers. The glue is brushed on in assembly line fashion, extending past the edges of the label. It dries transparent in 15-20 minutes The procedure is being done in both the Catalog Dept and the Preservation/Bindery Unit by student employees. The staff time involved is not much more than applying a label protector carefully. We tried label protectors the last couple of years in the Catalog Dept, but have gone back to gluing as a more permanent and effective method for label protection.
