Re: late November query: For those preferring to spend less for "cold light" illuminators, I recommend: Cuda Products1 904 737 7611 USA 6000 Powers Avenue Jacksonville, FL 32217-2279 USA Cuda supplies light sources, fiberoptic light pipes, and associated useful accessories for many specialized applications. I'm using their low-end illuminator model I-150 with a short light pipe for microscopy. The cost was around $200 three years ago. There is nothing that can put a library out of business faster than a fire, flood or earthquake. Disasters in libraries destroy collections, cost money and reduce morale. No institution is immune but some are managing the threat. Planning for potential disasters can make the difference between temporary loss of service and catastrophe. It is sixteen years since the publication of Peter Waters' influential book, `Procedures for Salvage of Water-Damaged Library Materials'. Six years later Sally Buchanan visited Australia and catalysed the development of counter-disaster plans for the Australian environment. Many of those who attended the workshop have since written counter-disaster plans and are now revising them. The conference will look at what has happened in the past sixteen years. National and international speakers will discuss how threats have changed and been quantified, how plans have worked or failed, the impact of disasters on new technologies and directions for future action. Included will be the latest developments in recovery techniques, fire detection and suppression systems and risk management. Keep September 1995 free to visit Sydney; it will be disastrous if you miss it.
