Regional labs and private conservators

Has anyone studied the effects of the opening of regional conservation
laboratories on the livelihood of private conservators?  Have these labs
siphoned away business from private conservators or contributed to
enlarging the work backlog for conservators through education of
institutional staffs and the public.

Do any private conservators have stories to tell about competition with
regional labs?
