Newspaper used as wallpaper

I am posting this enquiry on behalf of Michael Parer in Victoria,
Australia. Dr Parer is restoring an 1860 kitchen, the walls of which are
lined with 1866 newspaper in a crumbling state. The room will not be
used as a working kitchen and he seeks advice on how to
retain/restore/protect the newspapers on the 'adzed-hewn cut' timber
walls (sic).
