Subject: Exterior latex paint
In response to Artemis BonaDea's inquiry, "latex" paints are usually all or predominantly acrylic vehicles. Acetone will usually dissolve these but such dissolution may spread the paint or cause it to penetrate deeper. Ethyl alcohol may soften the paint enough to allow you to carefully scrape/lift it off with less risk of permeation. It is unlikely that all the paint residue will be removable without causing further damage to the book's surface. Good luck.
