Subject: Creation of permanent records
This item is posted on behalf of Karen Brown Attention Records Managers, Librarians, Archivists, Preservation Specialists: Paper conservator / student librarian seeks input for the purposes of a research paper. I would like to cite as many examples as possible of poor practices or materials use in the creation of paper records that adversely affect their duplicability or preservation. What features affect legibility, permanence, or ability to be copied or reformatted? Here are some examples: Use of fasteners, adhesives, tape which obscure or damage text Use of poor quality paper (permanence, standards) Use of poor quality forms (illegible in copy) I hope that this paper will eventually serve as the basis for developing standards for the creations of records, to extend their useful life, simplify duplication, and in general reduce the cost and increase the efficiency of archiving. If you are involved with the preservation of books, records, or manuscript collections, your thoughts, ideas, or experiences on the subject would be greatly appreciated!
