North Bennet Street School is offering two bookbinding workshops this summer: Cloth Case Bookbinding, July 24-28 Non-Adhesive Binding, July 31-August 4 Both will be taught by Michele Waters, assisted by Rebekah Lord Gardiner, both graduates of North Bennet Street School. Classes will meet Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. The price of each workshop is $400.00. We provide bench space, materials, and shop supplies. The few tools needed will be available at cost in class. Dormitory housing at local colleges is available at an extra cost of about $190.00 per week. Full course descriptions follow. For catalogues or information contact Pamela White, Workshop Coordinator, North Bennet Street School, 39 North Bennet Street, Boston, MA 02113. (617) 227-0155 (phone); (617) 227-9292 (fax). Cloth Case Bookbinding This workshop will introduce students to basic hand binding techniques. Each student will complete at least two bindings, one square and one with rounded and backed spine. Students can choose to make quarter covers using decorated paste papers produced in class. We will discuss the choice of rounded and backed or flat-back construction, tools, materials, and adhesives in simple hand bindings. Through demonstrations and exercises, students will learn the steps of cloth case book construction: folding, sewing, making and attaching endpapers, trimming, and covering in cloth. Additional topics will include decorative techniques including headbands, paste papers, and sprinkled edges. Alternative sewing structures will be discussed if time permits. Limited to 12 students. Classes larger than 9 will have an assistant. Non-adhesive Bookbinding This course will cover a historical range of sewn bindings as alternatives to traditional case bindings. Through demonstrations and exercises, students will learn to construct simple pamphlets, long stitch, Coptic, Japanese side sewn bindings, and others as time allows. Basic skills of folding, cutting, and sewing will be covered. Emphasis will be on matching an appropriate structure to the chosen materials and intended use of the book. Topics will also include paper selection and structural opportunities for decoration. Students are encouraged to bring a variety of paper types to work with, such as decorative, cover weight, and found papers. These structures lend themselves to the kind of expressive design found in artists' books. Limited to 12 students. Classes larger than 9 will have an assistant. Walter H.
