Pest Control in Museums: A Workshop Emphasizing Non-Toxic Fumigation Techniques 25 - 29 March, 1996 Sydney, Australia The Materials Conservation Section of the Australian Museum is offering an intensive five day course for Conservators, Collection Managers, and other museum, library and archive personnel on pest management. Topics covered during lectures and practicals will include integrated pest management; insects and their identification; chemical methods, including insect growth regulators; non-toxic fumigation, including low oxygen, heating and freezing. All sections on non-toxic fumigation treatments will be accompanied by a hands-on practical session. The emphasis for the course will be on training the participant to solve pest problems using non-toxic methods wherever possible. The section on low oxygen environments will include: Insect mortality in carbon dioxide, argon and nitrogen, the use of Ageless oxygen scavenger for treating small objects, dynamic nitrogen flow systems for treating larger objects, the use of commercial bubbles such as the one made by Rentokil, and modification of existing fumigation chambers to use inert gases. Lecturers: Workshop speakers will be internationally recognized experts in pest control, conservation and entomology, as well as representatives from the pest control industry. Fee: A$500 (approximately US$400), prior to January 15, 1996. The course will be restricted to 20 applicants. The fee will include workshop notes, morning and afternoon tea, and an opening day reception. The average cost for accommodation within walking distance of the Australian Museum ranges from A$60-150 per day.
