Subject: Heritage conference
The Robert Gordon University Heritage Convention in Inverness Eden Court 11-13 October 1995 Sharing The Earth: Local Identity in Global Culture The purpose of this event is to explore issues associated with sustainable use of the Earth's heritage assets for the cultural and economic benefit of local communities. Our heritage is rooted in local cultures and environments. But does modern communication and its international bias threaten regional and local integrity? How do we accommodate multinational companies and mass tourism without destroying valued vernacular traditions, and can concepts like Disney World be exported from one place to another? Speakers will address these questions, examine the cultural foundations of local identity, and look at how communities can gain or lose in a rapidly changing world order. Case studies have been selected for comparison of practice in different contexts to reveal how policies can be designed to ensure an equitable sharing of the Earth's cultural and environmental resources. The invited speakers include prominent practitioners and authors of recently published works which will have a profound effect on how things are done in the future. They will review public policy from regional and local standpoints, and will explore how to achieve best practice in both heritage conservation and commercial enterprise. The purpose is to stimulate international exchange among leading practitioners from Scotland and other countries. To supplement the three days of formal conference sessions, fringe events will be organised to provide an introduction to local culture. The target audience of 400 delegates is expected to be made up of policy makers, administrators and professionals in central & local government, NGOs, the heritage industry and universities who are concerned with tourism, economic development, cultural activities and the environment. The venue is Eden Court in Inverness, historic capital of the Scottish Highlands. The format of the event, supported by several central and local government agencies, will be similar to that of the University's successful Heritage Conventions in 1993 and 1994. A book of the papers will be published in time for delegates to receive copies on arrival in Inverness, and participation is invited from countries across the continents of the world. The university team is led by Professor Magnus Fladmark who will act as editor of the published papers, assisted by a panel of referees. He is supported by Brian Hill, and by Tom Band, formerly Chief Executive of the Scottish Tourist Board and Director of what is now Historic Scotland.
