Subject: Cleaning globes
I am posting this for someone who is not a member of this list. Can acetone be safely used to remove grease build-up from the surface of a globe? The globe is made of paper strips and evidently, a glossy surface remains after a test patch was wiped down with a cotton pad dampened with acetone. The pad also picked up some ink. Water solutions saturated the edges of the paper strips. The man posting the query estimates the globe to be 30 to 40 years old. Also, what sort of finish should be applied to protect the globe after the grease has been removed? Thanks for any suggestions.
