Subject: Gold lettersheet
The Autry Museum of Western Heritage recently acquired a pictorial lettersheet produced in the late 1850's. (Forerunners of picture postcards, the sheets were printed with scenes of life in California or scenes from the gold mines). The catalog says that the scenes were printed in "gold" ink. The ink looks dark brown but when viewed at the right angle there is a gold tinge. Does anyone know if the ink might really have gold in it, and if so, how could it be "shined up" or brightened? Any information or suggestions would be appreciated.
