Subject: ALCTS/PARS Preservation Education and Outreach Discussion Group
The ALCTS/PARS Preservation Education and Outreach Discussion Group met at the Midwinter Conference in San Antonio for two hours to discuss the subject: Establishing Homepages for Preservation Departments. A quick survey showed that most of the attendees had either already established a homepage, or were in the planning, or implementing stage of homepage design. Guest speaker Normandy Helmer (Head of Preservation and Binding) related her experiences with establishing a homepage for the University of Oregon (Eugene) Preservation Department. She detailed her involvement from planning to implementing the page and passed around an inclusive handout. Her presentation raised many questions and concerns and the ensuing discussion covered such areas as design and input from outside the department; standards as to what what can/must be included; who plans and actually composes the page; who maintains/updates; what type of material is included, e.g. practical preservation information, and/or links to other sites; amount of graphics included; the intended audience and its expectations. In response to the large number of library homepages which varied widely in their design, style and content, the University of Wisconsin-Madison's User Documentation Working Group established standards which are now in effect throughout the campus libraries. They address content, design and procedure/technique. A copy of these standards was handed out. The Discussion Group members felt this topic was of sufficient interest to be continued at the Annual Conference in New York. For that session I will call for volunteers who have established, or are in the process of establishing a homepage, to show and briefly discuss their homepage. Anyone who was not at the meeting but is interested in the handouts, please contact me, and I will be glad to send you a copy. Margit J.
