Project and Collection Information:

The intern will work with the C.L. Sonnichsen papers, a large

materials. The product will be a finding aid for the collection and
a draft MARC-AMC record. The intern may have opportunities to
respond to reference requests relating to the Sonnichsen papers.
Time permitting, the intern will also describe a collection
consisting approximately 12 linear feet of family correspondence
donated by Sonnichsen's brother.

Charles Leland Sonnichsen was an English professor and self-styled
"grassroots historian" who wrote numerous books on the history of
the Southwest as well as literary criticism. He taught at the
University of Texas at El Paso and its predecessor institutions for
43 years. He donated his collection of Western novels to the UTEP
library, along with his personal papers. His papers (consisting of
approximately 80 feet of manuscripts, correspondence, subject files,
and research notes) are unprocessed. Because of Dr. Sonnichsen's
popularity and his contributions to the University Library, the
University of Texas at El Paso named its special collections
department for him in 1994.

Department Information: The University of Texas at El Paso's C.L.
Sonnichsen Special Collections Department includes book collections
on Southwest and Border Studies, Chicano Studies, Military History,
Western Fiction, Printing and Book Design, Judaica, and Art. The
department also houses the University Library's rare books, theses
and dissertations, an oral history collection, and approximately 400
manuscript and photograph collections. The staff consists of two
professionals, one half-time military history curator, and two
classified staff.
