The Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies, Mount Carroll, Illinois, is offering a three day course entitled Introduction to the Care of Books to be given by Betsy Palmer Eldridge from September 19 - 21, 1996. The emphasis will be on leather, cloth and paper bindings from the 19th and 20th centuries. The course will cover the range of problems most often encountered, and discuss a variety of currently accepted solutions. The topics covered will include: 1. Terminology, structures and material; 2. Recognizing deterioration problems and formulating solutions; 3. Protective housings for damaged items; 4. Maintenance problems; 5. Guidelines for exhibition of bound volumes; 6. Disaster recovery procedures. The course will combine slide lectures and demonstrations and hands-on practicum in examination, using selected items including leather, cloth and paper bindings. Participants are encouraged to bring representative examples for discussion.
