The New England Conservation Association (NECA) has an exciting program for the first half of the 1996-1997 season: September 19, 1996 Rhode Island Convention Centre Providence, Rhode Island Admission: Free Check-in time: 6PM Viewing: 6PM-7PM Lecture: 7PM Tracy Shields, coordinator for the mammoth traveling exhibition organized by the Smithsonian to celebrate its 150th anniversary, and Martha Simpson, the other monitoring conservator, will discuss many of the conservation related issues impacting on the organization and the transport of the show. This is the show that features the Ruby Slippers, Abraham Lincoln's hat, a genuine Tucker Automobile and a wide range of other conservation nightmares. After the show closes, you are invited to observe how the exhibit is prepared for its shipment to its next venue. Guests welcome. Wheelock, curator of Northern Baroque Painting, National Gallery of Art, was the principle curator of the recent Vermeer exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the Mauritshuis in The Hague. The exhibit brought together an unprecedented number of masterpieces by this remarkable Dutch 17th century artist. Mr. Wheelock will explore how the exhibit was made--from the initial discussions about the exhibition's concept to the complex negotiations that allowed the loans. In addition, Mr. Wheelock will discuss some of the issues of conservation faced by the museums as they contemplated the restoration of these priceless treasures. Finally, the lecture examines aspects of Vermeer's painting process to try to come to some understanding of how he achieved his miraculous images.
