Historic use of chalk in Eastern painting

From: Margaret Perkins <mperkins>
Date: Thursday, October 3, 1996
I am not sure whether the request for information from James Martin
on the use of chalk in Eastern paintings specified which part of the
"East" as I have inadvertently deleted the original DistList.
However there is a very good book called Tibetan Thangka
Painting--Methods and Materials, by David and Janice Jackson,
published by Snow Lion Publications in 1984 and revised in 1988
which mentions the use of chalk both in the preparation of the
ground of the painting and as a pigment. It also covers the
preparation of the pigment for use.
