Subject: Photocopy toner stability
In Conservation DistList Instance 10:45, Beth Doyle asked about toner stability. Best book on toner formulations, etc is An Introduction to Dry Toner Technology John F Cooper Toner Research Services, Sharonville, OH 45241 513-733-4407 Fax: 513-733-4744 Two elements are important, the pigment and the resin carrier. The pigment is normally about 10 % carbon black which is pretty much stable, the resins are based on a wide range of polymers including, acrylics, epoxies, polyamides, polyesters, polystyrene, polyethylene. Most of today's are based on styrene-acrylic copolymers, with most toner manufacturers (frequently the copier manufacturer) having their own secret formulations. It is therefore very difficult to predict stability when you cannot get the formulation from a manufacturer and when each supplier has several different formulations.
