Exhibits Preparator - Preservation and Conservation Department The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens Position: The Exhibits Preparator is responsible for constructing appropriate supports for books and manuscripts and for ensuring their safety while on exhibit. Reports to the Chief Preservation Officer and works closely with conservation staff to establish and maintain conservation standards for the exhibition environment. Primary duties include selection of conservationally-sound exhibit materials (fabrics, adhesives, mats, etc.), matting, framing, and cradle construction for a variety of materials including books, manuscripts, photographs, and artwork. Maintains accurate and thorough records of all exhibitions including the time individual items have remained on display. Installs and takes down exhibits. Works with exhibition designers and vendors. Coordinates and oversees the transport of materials to and from exhibits using appropriate safety precautions. Monitors temperature, humidity, and light levels in exhibit areas. Maintains exhibitions database. Interacts with a variety of internal departments and units. Participates in the work of the preservation and conservation department. Qualifications: Required: A bachelor's degree in the arts or humanities. Excellent hand-eye coordination and attention to detail. Ability to keep up to date with the latest exhibition techniques. Ability and willingness to handle rare materials carefully. The ability to work well with a wide variety of people. Basic computer skills. Preferred: Two-three years preparing library materials for exhibit. Conversant with Windows 95. Prior exhibitions preparation or conservation experience. Knowledge of exhibit design and installation techniques including an understanding of the appropriate use of cradles, supports, frames, mats, cases, etc. Knowledge of appropriate environmental control measures for materials on exhibit. General: The Exhibits Preparator works in a laboratory environment with various adhesives, tools, and equipment, including but not limited to PVA adhesive, silicon and hot glue, cutting knives, mat cutter, book presses, dry mount press, and board shear.
