Subject: Bookcloth
This is in reference to the inquiry from Ann V. Frellsen (11/18/96) into the working qualities of the relatively new poly/cotton buckram. Ann, we have found it to be a little stronger, more flexible, and very satisfactory for making book cases in library binding. One comment to start with is that trying to dilute JADE 403 with Methyl Cellulose or paste is not going to work very well. A full strength adhesive such as JADE 403 will work a lot better though it will not be reversible. There are several other acceptable adhesives such as Evans and Wisdom. The choice of poly/cotton for repairing books is rather a questionable decision as it is generally too stiff and glossy and not as malleable as the old starch-filled buckram. There are many other materials on the market that would most likely be a good substitute, though they are more expensive. The suppliers of starch-filled buckram still have a large stock so I would suggest you purchase as much as you can before the stocks run dry.
