Subject: Workshops on environment
Date: 12 Dec 96 From: William Lull NYU Conservation Environment Workshops - Spring 1997 The following workshops will be offered March 3-5, 1997, as part of the Building and Construction Seminar Series at the New York University Real Estate Institute. They are a series of separate one-day seminars from 9am to 5:30pm. The topics are selected to be practical and useful in planning and managing collection environments, and are intended for museum, library and archives professionals, such as conservators, curators, archivists, registrars and directors, as well as for architects, engineers and others involved in construction and facilities management for collections-holding institutions. Conservation Environments for Museums and Libraries March 3, 1997; $185. This seminar discusses the issues involved in establishing safe "conservation" environments for preservation of museum, library and archive collections. Environmental goals are discussed for humidity, temperature, lighting, particulate control, gaseous contamination, and collection safety. Solutions to typical situations and problems are discussed for HVAC, lighting and building envelopes, including precautions to take in the design, construction and operation of conservation environments. Low-cost as well as fully-financed improvements are discussed. Fundamentals of Conservation Environment Lighting March 4, 1997; $185. This seminar will discuss the issues involved in planning, designing and maintaining practical and effective conservation environment lighting in museums, libraries and archives. Applications for display and storage/stack lighting will be discussed, including typical calculations, light sources and equipment. In-class demonstrations and light measurements will be made using typical light sources and measurement equipment. Planning and Programming Museum, Library and Archive Projects March 5, 1997; $185. Lecture, slides and case studies discuss essential elements in planning and programming an expansion, renovation or new building for a museum, library or archive. Topics include: space needs assessment, storage and display space efficiencies, space adjacency needs and conflicts, entry and daylighting implications, shipping and collections access, environmental needs and systems, lighting, setting construction budgets, and justifying environmental improvements. Lecturer: William P. Lull, President, Garrison/Lull Inc., Adjunct Associate Professor of Building Technology, NYU. Mr. Lull is a noted consultant, lecturer and author in the field of conservation environments for museums, libraries and archives.
