Subject: Paintings mounted on glass
A client of mine recently purchased two oil paintings dated 1809, executed on linen which at some time were mounted face up onto glass. In other words the face of the painting is adhered to the glass. It almost appears as if the painting was painted onto the glass but upon close examination one can determine that the mounting was done at a later date. The client wants to remove the glass from the painting and mount the paintings onto a stretcher or panel. I would like to know if anyone has come across the same problem and how they approached the situation.
