Subject: Workshops on bookbinding and book repair
The Potomac Guild of Book Workers Chapter and the Preservation Department at the Milton S. Eisenhower Library at Johns Hopkins University, has organized two workshops with open registration for any interested parties. Adhesive Binding with Peter Jermann This is a two day workshop: Saturday, August 9, 10am-5pm; Sunday, August 10, 1pm-4pm. Enrollment is limited to 8 people. Participants will learn the theory and practice of adhesive binding for the hand binder and in-house library repair units. Desk-top publishing, paperbacks, and the photocopier highlight the need for simple but sound binding structures for publications on separate sheets. Discussions and hands-on exercises will include the selection of adhesives, the dynamics of adhesive binding structures, and quarter-joint binding. Participants will make several binding models illustrating structural variations. Participants will need an apron, personal hand tools (if desired), and a bag lunch for Saturday. Projects: paperback rebind with cover on outside paperback rebind with cloth cover softcover quarterbind quarterjoint binding quarterjoint binding with support (demonstration, hands-on as time allows) rounded and backed case binding (demonstration, hands-on as time allows) Cost: $90. Cutoff date for registration is August 1. Pete Jermann, preservation officer for the Friedsam Library at St. Bonaventure University, began researching adhesive binding techniques ten years ago in order to develop efficient rebinding structures for use in a small in-house library binding and repair unit. He has published a study on book structures in New Library Scene (August, 1994). Japanese Paper Hinge Repair with Don Etherington This one day session will be held September 13, 10am-4pm, and is limited to 15 people. Don presented this at the GBW Standards Conference a few years ago, so this is a good opportunity for those of you who missed it. The workshop will cover Don's technique for reattaching or supporting weakened joints of leather bindings, particularly 19th or 20th century books. Participants will bring books suitable for this repair technique. The spines should be intact and the boards in generally good condition. Books should be no larger than 10" in height and 1 1/2" in thickness. Joints are reattached using strips of dyed Japanese paper and a mixture of reversible PVA and rice starch paste. The technique is particularly effective on books with tight spines which normally require considerable expertise and time to reback. Cost: $50. Cutoff date for registration is September 4. Workshops will be held in the Conservation Department, 108 Kreiger Hall, Milton S. Eisenhower Library on the JHU campus. Directions will be sent with confirmation of enrollment.
