The 2nd International Seminar and the 4th ITUC International Meeting
Conservation and Urban Sustainable Development: a Theoretical
Framework

The Seminar will focus on four main themes:

    1.  Theoretical Frameworks for Urban Sustainability

        *   Ethics and urban conservation
        *   Definitions and concepts of sustainable urban
            development
        *   Links to environmental movement
        *   Urban diversity, continuity, and change

    2.  Experiences in Urban Conservation and Sustainability</p>

        *   Application of sustainability concepts to "urban
            conservation" plans
        *   Application of sustainable urban conservation principles
            to city and territory
        *   Innovative and experimental programmes linking urban
            conservation and sustainable practices

    3.  Evaluation and Assessment of Urban Conservation Initiatives

        *   Tools, instruments, and methodologies for evaluation and
            assessment: The use of environmental impact assessment,
            cost/benefit analysis, impact evaluation and other
            methods for urban conservation
        *   Quantification of values for use in evaluation systems
        *   Collection, management and communication of information
            for use in evaluation and assessment

    4.  Training and Education for Urban Conservation and
        Sustainable Development</p>

        *   Overall frameworks and strategies for training and
            education in conservation and sustainability
        *   Training and education in urban conservation and
            sustainability for planning and conservation
            professionals
        *   Training and education in urban conservation and
            sustainability for politicians and decision-makers
        *   Education and awareness programmes for the public at
            large
