The following may be of interest to recipients of this list: The effectiveness of different stone consolidants for the conservation of stone buildings. Director of Studies: Dr D. Halsey Overview: An important method for conserving our built heritage is the application of various products to consolidate deteriorated stone masonry. The success of these treatments depends on several factors and is often hard to predict. This project examines the effectiveness of various consolidants with special reference to the physical properties of the stone and the influence of temperature and moisture conditions. Applicants should have a minimum of an upper second degree in a science or engineering discipline. Knowledge of building conservation, statistics and computing skills would be an advantage. The studentships attract an annual bursary of 5,500 pounds sterling payable quarterly in advance. There may also be opportunity for students to undertake paid tutorial / lecture work where appropriate. Research students are expected to register for, and actively pursue a MPhil / PhD--all fees are paid for by BERU in this respect. Closing date for Applications is Wednesday 15 April 1998.
