Subject: Call for papers--lighting
Light and Lighting in Historic Structures That House Collections November 5-7, 1998 Williamsburg, Virginia Call For Abstracts In 1990 the Association for Preservation Technology International (APT) and the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) organized a symposium on museums in historic buildings as part of the APT Annual Conference in Montreal. A second symposium was held in New Orleans; this resulted in the New Orleans Charter for the Joint Preservation of Historic Structures and Artifacts. The Charter has since been endorsed by many professional organizations in the United States and Canada, and is also being used by a number of international organizations. The topic of the Third APT/AIC Symposium on Museums in Historic Buildings, to be held prior to APT's 1998 annual conference in Williamsburg, Virginia, is "Light and Lighting in Historic Structures that House Collections". Light is the only environmental factor that plays two different roles in the exhibition of cultural property. Light, as conservators constantly warn, is responsible for irreversible deterioration of artifacts. At the same time, light is necessary for exhibition, and can play a positive role in the interpretation of cultural property. The function of light in an historic interior is to make the furnishings visible in the way they were seen originally, in candlelight, gaslight, etc., but light also conveys a host of culturally determined meanings, from defining interior spaces to illustrating spirituality. Although several meetings in recent years have focused on museum lighting, little attention has been paid to the specific needs of historic structures that house collections, the history of their natural and artificial lighting systems, and the challenge of meeting practical lighting requirements without compromising the either the structure or its artifacts. This symposium aims to test the application of the charter to specific projects that involve light and lighting. Abstracts of 250-500 words for proposed 25 minute presentations are requested by 15 May 1998. Acceptances will be mailed out no later than 15 June 1998, and papers which will be published and distributed at the symposium are to be submitted for peer-review by 1 August 1998. Final text and images will be required no later than 1 15 September 1998. Abstracts should be sent to Dr. Thomas H. Taylor, Jr., Chair of the Steering Committee, Third APT/AIC Symposium on Museums in Historic Buildings, P.O. Box 3511, Williamsburg, VA 23187 or FAX 757-220-7787 or e-mail ttaylor [at] widomaker__com. Please include the presenter's name, mailing address, telephone number, fax number, e-mail address, and a 75-100 word biography. In cases where there is more than one presenter, a single contact person should be identified. *** Conservation DistList Instance 11:82 Distributed: Thursday, April 9, 1998 Message Id: cdl-11-82-007 ***Received on Thursday, 9 April, 1998
