Subject: Exhibit on Jacques Maroger and his followers
We are opening an exhibit of realists works on May 15th and thought that since the exhibit focuses on Jacques Maroger, former restorer and technical director at the Louvre's Laboratory in Paris, that the upcoming conference in Washington, DC may be interested in visiting. Evergreen House will open "Baltimore Realists - Jacques Maroger and his Followers", a traveling exhibition organized by 20 North Gallery, Toledo, Ohio on May 15, 1998 with a reception in the Evergreen Theatre from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Baltimore Realists features works by 28 realists painters including Baltimore artists Joseph Sheppard, Melvin Miller, Jr., Will Wilson, Christine Merrill, Elizabeth Byrd Mitchell, and Ann Didusch Schuler. The relationship between Alice Garrett who lived at Evergreen from 1920 to 1952 and Jacques Maroger spanned over two decades. She was his friend, patron and student. Her involvement in the world of contemporary art is documented by her collection of paintings and her contributions as a board member of the Baltimore Museum of Art. Maroger came to the United States in 1939 and taught in New York at the Parsons School of Design and at the Maryland Institute from 1940 to 1959. He published in 1949 The Secret Formulas and Techniques of the Masters in which he detailed his discovery of mediums for painting based on his research into the methods and materials of the great masters from VanEyck to Rubens. The Baltimore Realists exhibit will run from May 15 to July 9 and can be seen Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 1 to 4 p.m. Evergreen House is located at 4545 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD.
