Subject: Position at the Freer Gallery
Freer Gallery of Art/Arthur M. Sackler Gallery Department of Conservation and Scientific Research This department has available a short-term position for a research technician, as part of a program for research on East Asian paintings using scientific methods. The position is available consequent to the receipt of a major grant from the Mellon Foundation, and the incumbent will help develop several lines of investigation into the materials, structures, techniques and deterioration mechanisms in the paintings of China, Japan and Korea. The Freer and Sackler Galleries have major collections of such paintings. We are looking for someone with a good background in the physical sciences to help the principal investigator develop novel methods of research on these works of art. Experience in operating and maintaining laboratory instrumentation will be useful, and the person will use such methods in performing identifications and analyses on paintings and removed samples. A Master's level qualification in one of the physical sciences or equivalent experience would be appropriate. Applicants should obviously have an interest in working with cultural properties; previous experience in the field would be useful but not essential. A range of laboratory equipment is already available, and we intend to expand this as needed for the purposes of this research. Development of methods specially adapted for these purposes may be involved. Applicants should be U.S. citizens or permanently resident non-citizens. The position is full time at grade IS-9, starting salary $32,457 plus benefits. Appointments will be for one year renewable for up to 3 years total .
