Subject: Active participation in DistList
At the recent AIC meeting, several people mentioned to me my participation on this list. I told them that I would like to see more people contribute. I believe that the readers and writers on this list have been unfailingly polite, tolerant, and aware that we are not writing researched dissertations but off-the-top-of-our-head notes that are meant to be maximally helpful while at the same time an efficient use of our time. I believe that flare-ups, as "nice" as they been, primarily stem from the possibility that professional advice may be used by untrained people to do work they shouldn't be doing, that is, that our efforts to help preserve objects may potentially be harmful to them. We are not an unkind group. In any case, the reason I am writing is to encourage more people who ordinarily read but do not write to chime in. Questions from many sources have sparked very interesting discussions. Don't be shy! B.
