Library Assistant V MIT Libraries-Binding and Repair Section Position Number: 98-0530L Under minimal supervision, is responsible for preserving library materials through a commercial binding service, and in-house repair. Commercial binding: manages weekly outgoing and incoming shipments; evaluates condition of materials; selects method of binding or repair; prepares and processes shipments; maintains quality control; uses automated system to manage shipments; keeps statistics; processes invoices; communicates with staff in other library units and at the commercial bindery. In-house book repair: performs a variety of repair treatments (e.g. rebacking, recasing, protective enclosures, paper mending, pamphlet binding) on the circulating materials; participates in preservation projects, including disaster response, and may work on special collections. In absence of supervisor, coordinates daily work of the unit. Trains student assistants. Other duties as required, including shelf preparation of new library materials. Qualifications: 4.5 years direct/related experience. Post high school education can count toward experience. Knowledge of Windows and spreadsheet applications. Familiarity with ABLE binding software preferred. Bookbinding and repair skills required; formal training preferred. Knowledge of preservation field desired. Strong interpersonal, communication and training skills. Organization skills; ability to work efficiently in a production environment. Physical stamina for handling heavy boxes. Hours: 35 hours per week. Monday-Friday 9:00-5:00.
